Long distance Addicks

Richard, ex Thailand, now Peru
Bob and Mark from Hamilton, Ontario
Susan from Oakville, Ontario
Traditionally written off as a 'small club', even though we're in the Premiership, Charlton nevertheless have support throughout the world. When we beat Sunderland in the First Division Playoff Final at Wembley in May 1998 one ex-pat was present having travelled all the way from Cairns in Australia.

And even amongst our small group at the Rose of Denmark we have a number of long distance supporters

These are our 'Members of the Opposition' photos from the 2002/03 season, when we first realised that we'd stumbled on a good way of extending the enjoyment that we could get from matchdays through greater contact with visiting supporters. Lazy journalists find it all too easy to focus on instances of conflict between supporters, when in reality there is far more that unites us but which is unnewsworthy.

We have a flag!

The Flag in the garden of the RoD
Addicks at Roda JC
This flag has travelled a bit! This year alone it to Holland, when a few of us visited Roda JC for their final match of the season, and it also went to Euro 2004.

Farewell to SuperClive

Clive Mendonca's farewell
While we wait for the new season to start I'm searching through my archives for Charlton-related photos. This photo was taken in April 2002 when the Valley faithful said a sad but fond farewell to Clive Mendonca, whose hat-trick at Wembley in May 1998 had done so much to establish the club in the Premiership.

i think i remember mendonca playing for sheffield united a LONG time ago, great memories Wed 4-Aug-2004 12:51

We're a group of Charlton Athletic supporters who meet before and after every home game at the Rose of Denmark pub close to The Valley.

We got to know each other over a number of years through the supporters' mailing list and eventually started to meet at the RoD in gathering numbers during our first season in the Premiership in 1998/99. The social side of our meetings has become almost as enjoyable as the matches we've seen, sometimes more so on those occasions when we've witnessed a shocking performance, e.g. 1-6 against Leeds in 2003!

The fun of matchdays is often enhanced by the banter we have with visiting supporters, who almost without exception have been a pleasure to spend time with. Chatting over the match prospects with people who're familiar with the 'opposition' means that we know better who to watch out for, or who the visitors can't stand for his lack of effort - we can ALL sympathise with THAT!

We meet in London during the long summer break, to chat over the latest signings (or lack of them!) and to work out which of the pre-season games we're going to. We also have our own mailing list where we chat about all sorts of things, not just the Addicks. So, this blog might be a way of joining up with similarly-minded supporters of all clubs.

In August 2002 we set ourselves the challenge of taking a photo of a member of the group with at least one visiting supporter at every home game. This was so successful that we decided to carry on with this for future seasons. On this page I've posted all of the photos we took last season.

The support that we get from Dermot and Kath, who run the 'RoD' is also a major encouragement for us, and they're very keen to display these photos in the pub itself. They also offer amazingly fast and efficient service, which is just as well on match days as the pub is usually packed to the doors. You'll find it at 296 Woolwich Road. You can generally find us 'RoDsters' in the pub on matchdays either in the garden or to the right of the bar where the photos are on display, and you're welcome to buy any of us a pint! ;o)

But beware - after the match there's a 'Home Supporters Only' policy.
