Liveliest pre-match ever

CAFC 3 Brentford 1, 18th February 2006
Glynne's friends

Many congratulations to Brentford supporters for possibly the liveliest pre-match session we've ever had in the RoD, and also for providing their team with very vocal support throughout the match.

As has been commented elsewhere it looks as if the understandable hype from Greg Dyke and Martin Allen in the days up to the game had little effect.. Allen probably squeezed the best possible performance from his players, who weren't disgraced but didn't seriously threaten the upset that quite a few Charlton supporters might have feared.

It was interesting to note that there was no abuse aimed at Kishishev, which maybe indicated that the idiots who persist in booing him aren't loyal enough to turn up for Cup games to pursue their unpleasant vendetta. They certainly don't take any notice of the way in which he covers the upfield sorties made by his team mates, so I doubt very much that they'd have had the wit to recognise that Kish has provided four exquisite assists in the last three games. From my perspective I hope that they stay away permanently, as Charlton needs Kish more than it needs them - by a LONG way.

Dear Glynne,

Many thanks for the hospitality and rarefied atmosphere pre match, it's a nice little boozer you have there). Shame the football didn't quite live up to the hype. My worst fear was realised three minutes in, from there it was more about saving face and hoping for a goal to cheer our spirits. Still, fantastic day had by all (apart from the small majority of idiots in the East Stand)! All the best for the remainder of the season. See you at Hank in June.

All the best,

Regards,

Paul

Bromley Supporters Club

Ben Hayes, Dennis Rommedahl, Stephan Andersen
Dennis Rommedahl and Stephan Andersen were guest at a meeting of Bromley Supporters club chaired by new Supporter Director-elect Ben Hayes. They were excellent speakers, and having attended a similar meeting a year or so at which Mark Fish and Radostin Kishishev spoke I can thoroughly recommend these evenings as a way to gain a better understanding of our club.

Malachi's 'baptism'

View all 13 photos...
A year ago a fellow Addick, Brady Coughlan, sent me some photos of his grandson, Samuel, attending his first ever Charlton game, which was the Cup win against Yeovil. A year on, another 4th round home tie, and Brady's other grandson, Malachi, joined the family outing.

Brady's photos encapsulate what a strange experience it must be for such a young lad as Malachi, especially when you notice how accustomed to it all Samuel seems to have become in the year since his own 'baptism'.

Given that Charlton are said to have lost a generation of new supporters during our exile it's good to see that we're developing our grass roots again - well done, Bradley!

Out of the blue we beat the Reds

CAFC 2 Liverpool 0, 8th February 2006
Well. this was a result I hadn't expected. I fact, I hadn't expected us even to score.

And maybe we might not have done had it not been for a hotly-disputed penalty just before half time, secured when Dudek apparently brought down Darren Bent. Subsequent review in the pub left some doubt over the amount of contact. Carragher argued long and bitterly with the referee and was booked for dissent. Carrying this on long afterwards must have taken him very close to a second yellow. I really can't understand why 'professionals' do this - did he truly expect the penalty to be rescinded?

Three minutes after the goal, with Liverpool still not having regained their composure, a stunning flick from Kishishev opened up the Liverpool defence and as the ball ping-ponged in the area Luke Young struck a fierce diagonal shot into the net. 2-0 up halftime was a LOT more than the home supporters could possibly have expected, given recent performances.

The Liverpool supporters we met in the Rose of Denmark before the game were excellent company, as always. If any of you have problems downloading the photo from this site please contact me and I'll e-mail it to you.

I've also had a pleasant e-mail from the Birmingham supporter whose photo appeared here recently. As we always say, the camaraderie that we share pre-match in the pub proves that the vast majority of supporters of ALL teams are decent people like ourselves having a sociable and friendly day out

Cold comfort

CAFC 0 West Bom 0, 31/01/2006
A bitterly cold night called for something for us to 'warm our hands on', but we didn't get that, unfortunately. It was good to see the Bents hunting together upfront and Marcus' more physical approach will be useful, but overall it was a disappointing performance.

It was also chilling to see that the net effect of our dealings in the now-closed transfer window
was the gain of Marcus Bent (big fee) for the loss of Murphy (smaller fee), and the exit of only one of our players whose sell-by date has passed - very disappointing.

There's also been a chill in the air recently over the continuing statements coming from the club concerning Murphy. In any negotiations it's essential to conceal your hand from the other side, but I believe that there's merit in the view that if the club finds itself unable to be frank with its supporters on a given topic it should simply say nothing at all. I for one will now be distrusting anything that the club puts out as a press release on any topic until I see independent corroboration.

Is it just me or were things better than this not so long ago?

O's so close

CAFC 2 Orient 1, 28/01/06
Just a bunch of ....
It's hard not to feel sorry for Orient. They turned up in huge numbers to support their team and their players responded magnificently. In fact, this was probably the biggest away contingent at The Valley since Yeovil visited in the same round last year.

It's days like today that give back a bit of credibility to the murky, disreputable world of English professional football, blighted as it is with greed and lack of effort. There were no problems with the Orient supporters at all, as far as I'm aware, and not a great deal of abuse hurled between the two groups of supporters, apart from Orient's, 'Premier League? You're having a laugh!' and the home crowd's, 'Who the f****** hell are you?'

Orient were well worth a draw and a replay, and in truth I'm far from sure that we'd have taken as many supporters to Brisbane Road as they brought to us. Last season we played Rochdale and Yeovil in the Cup and their supporters, like Orient's, were a joy to welcome to The Valley. Ah, the romance of the Cup!

Well done Orient.

As usual, we wore our talismanic 'Deportivo Wanka' shirts for this Cup match. In case we be accused of disrespect to our team it should be stressed that we don't wear them to Premiership matches, and that it's as much an observation about ourselves and our undue optimism about Cup matches as about the lamentable underperformance in all cup competitions under Alan Curbishley.

Whatever anyone at the club says, the results over the years tell us that there is zero expectation of progress and consequently little effective preparation for it. Nevertheless, we do seem to be inching up our performances in the past couple of years, with two successive FA Cup 5th round ties and also a remarkable victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carling Cup. You never know - this might be the year when we succeed in spite of the club's pessimism ;o)

CAFC 2 Birmingham 0, 14/01/06
Charlton struggled past a Birmingham side who just couldn't score despite their having the better of the match. The much-criticised Bryan Hughes scored after half an hour with a downward header from a Rommedahl corner, and Bent scored in extra time on a breakaway that was set up by Hughes. Once you see Bent haring goalwards with keeper advancing and defender closing you just know he's going to score - he's that good.

On another positive note we're back at our usual pre-match venue with harmony restored.

Another welcome win

CAFC 2 West Ham 0, 31/12/2005
CAFC 2 West Ham 0, 31/12/2005
Charlton survived an early West Ham onslaught to sneak the first goal very much against the run of play when Bent crossed a wonderful pass that Bartlett scored from at the far post. All too often we've seen the Addicks fall away after the break, but, unusually, the second half saw Charlton settling down a little and then Bent getting the second from a superb cross from Chrissie Powell.

The rot appears to have been stopped, but without an obvious reason why it started in the first place. Rumours are rife about players' disaffection and Curbs doesn't yet seem to have accepted that the poor run is in any way down to him, so clearly we're not out of the woods yet.

We were back at the RoD for this game, and will stay there for the future as it's the location that suits our group the best. Also, normal service was resumed as far as the customarily friendly welcome was concerned.

Looking up - a bit

CAFC 0, Arsenal 1, 26th December 2005
In spite of a line-up that sounded very uninspiring when it was announced, Charlton looked enthusiastic and committed, and the crowd picked that up. In the first half Arsenal were dreadful, but picked up in the second. Charlton had ridden their luck with a couple of escapes and near misses and must have been thinking that today was their lucky day, until Reyes picked up a loose ball close in.

In spite of this, the feeling was still there that a point could be salvaged, until Murphy, who as an experienced International who'd already been booked REALLY should know better, threw down the ball in a temper tantrum over a free kick awarded to Arsenal and was sent off. After that there wasn't much hope.

Turn of the tide?

Us in a different post-match setting
Charlton broke a losing streak yesterday, but it wasn't the convincing victory that we wished for. It'd be nice to see us dominate a match for a change.
